Cheyne aims to maintain new-found status
South African Greg Cheyne reunites with the flying filly Sweet Sanette tomorrow at Sha Tin in the Group Three Bauhinia Sprint Trophy, hoping to keep intact his new-found status as the 'King Of 1,000m' races.
'You know last season I was dubbed 'King Of the Fillies' because I won on all the female horses during the season and now I'm King Of The 1,000m races - I guess if I keep on racking up these specialist roles, then one day I'll have the set,' said Cheyne, who has won nine of the 59 races over 1,000m this season, two more than Gerald Mosse, though he is five-all with Matthew Chadwick up the Sha Tin straight course.
Cheyne forged a good relationship with Sweet Sanette last season, riding her four times in her first five starts for two wins and a second, with her only unplaced run for him a close fifth over 1,200m, before other riders have been preferred.
With Sweet Sanette's stable change from Gary Ng Ting-keung to Tony Millard, Cheyne finds himself back on board for the first time in almost exactly a year and he feels the five-year-old is thriving on the move from summer camp to boot camp.
'I think I can say she's had more constructive work now than in the past and she seemed more relaxed going to gates when I trialled her a couple of weeks ago,' he said.
'She was still quirky in the gates and that's just her, but otherwise she felt more settled. She meets Sacred Kingdom quite a bit better at the handicaps than when we met last time at set weights and we have the right draw, so I'm hoping she can turn the result around.'
In other news, former champion miler and Horse Of the Year, Good Ba Ba, looks likely to gain inclusion in the BMW Champions Mile on April 25. Connections of Dubai-based Mufarrh have withdrawn the horse after he was running a temperature following track work yesterday, opening the way for the first reserve to make his fifth consecutive appearance in the Group One race he won in 2008.
