Young inventors show green credentials at fair
A machine for making yogurt at home was among a range of environmentally friendly appliances presented at a trade fair yesterday by Polytechnic University students.
Students Matto Chu Ho-wing, Max So Ka-ho and Eva Wong Chung-hung, all 21, invented the device, which does not use electricity.
'People can put hot water into the base then pour in milk and yogurt starter and leave it for six hours,' Chu said at the Houseware Fair, which opened at the Convention and Exhibition Centre yesterday.
A spoonful of ready-made yogurt can act as the 'starter'.
Another team designed a 'FasThaw 360' defroster, which can be wrapped round frozen food to make it thaw quicker. 'A frozen chicken takes eight hours to defrost at room temperature,' team member Kara Kam Ka-ying said. 'With our defroster, it will be ready in two hours.'
Eighty-eight pieces of aluminium embedded in the wrap conducted heat to the frozen food.
Meanwhile, Wong Kwok-wing's team rolled out a vacuum cleaner head that can mop the floor and suck up dust at the same time.
The creations were the result of a joint project between Polytechnic University, Bunhoi Group and Hang Seng Bank. It led to 33 mechanical engineering students spending a year developing products.
