The city's annual major ice hockey tournament - 2011 Mega Ice Hockey 5 - will kick off at the Mega Ice rink next week. Youth division matches will take place from May 2 to 7.

Local junior elite players are looking forward to facing opponents from Beijing, Singapore and elsewhere.

'My friends and I just went on a trip to Beijing and played friendly matches against the city's Little Wolf team,' said Bob Ngan Cheuk-long, a 10-year-old player. 'It is very likely we will face them in the tournament again.'

Bob plays for Penguins Hockey Club. His outstanding performance has earned him a place in the Hong Kong Select Team, the territory's biggest hope to keep the division title on home soil.

'I hope to become a professional NHL player,' Bob said. 'This is my first year as a player in Mini Squirt A and I hope my role on the Hong Kong Select Team can strengthen my abilities and help me make my dream come true.'

Bob added that he can now handle body checks by other players. 'I can keep on playing even though it can be very painful for me,' said Bob, a Primary Four student from Evangel College.
