Auction plan
No doubt eager to fill its auction rooms, Christie's Education is holding a three-day course titled Introduction to the Modern and Contemporary Chinese Art Market ahead of its Hong Kong spring auctions, which will take place between May 27 and June 1.
The lectures (in English and Putonghua), designed to nurture aspiring collectors of contemporary art, will run from 10am to 4.45pm and feature guest speakers from various areas of the art world, including Christie's Asia chairman Ken Yeh and managing director Jonathan Stone.
The president of Christie's Asia, Francois Curiel, says the goal 'is to educate new generations of collectors about art history, the development of the market and the importance of provenance'.
The course will start with an overview of art history and explore the origins of Western modern and contemporary art, Chinese ink and oil painting in the 20th century and the development of Chinese art in the international market from the 1980s. Participants will also learn how the market has evolved.
An insider view of auctioneering will be offered, followed by a look at art as investment.
Participants will be invited to a programme of events including cocktail receptions and auctions. They will also receive a letter of attendance and complimentary copies of Christie's Hong Kong Spring 2011 catalogues.
