Mainland actress Li Bingbing quickly surmounted a big challenge for her new movie, Snow Flower and the Secret Fan. Directed by Joy Luck Club director Wayne Wang, the film is an adaptation of Chinese-American novelist Lisa See's book of the same title. To be screened at Cannes this month, it co-stars Korean actress Gianna Jun Ji-hyun and X-Men star Hugh Jackman.

Li (right), who plays both a modern-day Chinese-American woman and another character from the 19th century, delivers half her lines in English, which she had to brush up.

'To be very honest, my English is not very good; it's just at the level of third year at junior middle school,' Li said. 'When I made this movie, I worried about my English lines. But... it motivated me to overcome an obstacle.'
