4 accused of lying on club application
Four Jockey Club members appeared in Eastern Court yesterday accused of making false statements on an application form of someone seeking to become a racing member.
Robert Ng Ka-ki, 56, John Douglas Mackie, 82, Tong Kam-pui, 62, and Ho Wai-shek, 53, entered no plea. Mackie is a business director and Jockey Club voting member, while the others are merchants and club members. Ng alone faces one count of being an agent accepting an advantage. All four defendants are jointly charged with one count of conspiracy to defraud.
The case arose from a corruption complaint. Subsequently, the ICAC exposed the alleged offences.
The bribery charge against Ng alleges that in July last year, he accepted HK$250,000 as an inducement to provide a club racing membership application form to a person, and for arranging other HKJC members to support the application.
The conspiracy charge alleges that from June to November last year, all four defendants conspired together to defraud by falsely stating that the information in the racing membership application form was true.
The case weas adjourned to July 14 for mention. The defendants were each granted cash bail of HK$50,000.
