Love given up is never the same again

Renowned Hong Kong movie director Andrew Lau Wai-keung assembles film stars from Taiwan, the mainland and Hong Kong for his romantic drama A Beautiful Life.

The prolific Lau is most commonly associated with Hong Kong crime-action films. He was the creative force behind the Infernal Affairs trilogy and the adaptation of the manga Initial D.

This time Lau teams up with long-time collaborator Shu Qi in a big-budget tear-jerker that delves into the theme of rediscovering old relationships.

Property agent Li Peiru (Shu) has a chance encounter with police officer Fang Zhendong (Liu Ye) at a karaoke lounge.

Fang immediately feels a 'connection' with her.

But the self-centred Li does not feel the same way and is just toying with him.

She's involved with a married man, her boss.

Eventually she takes advantage of Fang financially and runs off to Hong Kong.

Years later, she comes to regret her decision and returns to Beijing to look for Fang.

But she discovers that his life has since changed.

A Beautiful Life opens on May 26
