Heung Yee Kuk votes for new leadership team
The Heung Yee Kuk, which looks after the interests of indigenous residents in the New Territories, will elect its leadership today for the next four-year term. Chairman Lau Wong-fat, who has held the post for four decades, and vice-chairman Cheung Hok-ming are both tipped to stay. But another vice-chairmanship may see competition. Incumbent deputy Daniel Lam Wai-keung and Tsuen Wan Rural Committee chairman Chung Wai-ping have indicated interest in the position, but say their decisions to run hinge on Lau's support.
Sun Yat-sen mausoleum gets a brushing-up
To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the 1911 revolution that overthrew the Qing dynasty, a three-week refurbishment of the mausoleum of the father of modern China, Dr Sun Yat-sen, will start today in Nanjing , Jiangsu province. The focus of the works will be a statue of Sun, wall sculptures and the memorial hall's marble pillars. Many cities are hoping to make use of the occasion to attract tourists to historic sites linked to the revolution.
Xi Jinping starts two-week overseas tour
Vice-President Xi Jinping today starts an official tour that takes in Italy, Cuba, Uruguay and Chile. Xi will meet Italian President Giorgio Napolitano, the first vice-president of the Cuban Council of State, Jose Ramon Machado, Uruguayan Vice-President Danilo Astori and Chilean President Sebastian Pinera during the tour, which ends on June 13.
