The trouble with Fifa

What?

What's happened? Fifa, world soccer's governing body, was hit with a corruption scandal just as it was electing its new president. Vice-president Jack Warner was suspended after allegations that he, and presidential candidate Mohamed bin Hammam, tried to bribe voters for their support. Bin Hammam stepped down, leaving only the incumbent, Sepp Blatter, to stand in yesterday's vote. Some member nations had wanted the vote postponed. Fifa is also fighting claims that Qatar bought the rights to host the World Cup 2022, which England was tipped to win.

Who?

Who accused Warner? Fifa's executive committee member Chuck Blazer made the allegation. Who said Qatar had bought the World Cup? Jerome Valcke, Fifa's secretary general, admitted he wrote a private e-mail to Warner, saying bin Hammam may have thought in his campaign that 'you can buy Fifa as they bought the WC [World Cup]'.

How?

How did the claims arise? After being accused of bribery, Warner revealed to journalists details of Valcke's e-mail. A full inquiry will look into claims that Caribbean soccer leaders were bribed a total of US$1million to back bin Hammam's presidential bid.

Where?

Where did Fifa's presidential vote take place? Yesterday's election was held in Zurich, Switzerland. Swiss-born Blatter, 75, president for the past 12 years, secured his fourth four-year term in office.

Why?

Why were there allegations of corruption? Blazer, an American official with the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football, made the claims while undertaking an anti-corruption investigation with a group of American lawyers.

When?

When will this be resolved? It is still unclear when these inquiries into the bribery claims will be concluded.
