1+1: A Cross-Strait-Four-Regions Artistic Exchange Project

An elaborate exhibition at the Hong Kong Arts Centre features 14 artists from the mainland, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan in a series of paired artistic collaborations. But the premise of bringing artists together based on their geographical  proximity proves limiting. The exhibition is entitled 1+1: A Cross-Strait-Four-Regions Artistic Exchange Project.
 As curators Jeff Leung Chin-fung of Hong Kong and Wang Te-yu of Taiwan point out, a successful collaboration of visual artists must be based on a 'common friendship'. 
Discussions between Taiwanese artist Ho Ming-kuei and Macau artist and architect Joao O Bruno Soares were conducted digitally in Shenzhen. The resulting data was stored using cloud-computing technology. 
The dialogues were used as a base for a sound installation, a small painting using cork as the base media and a group of engaging mixed-media sculptures depicting parts of landscapes.  
The importance of friendship was reiterated  when  mainland artist Zhao Zhao - a member of Chinese artist/activist Ai Weiwei's Beijing studio staff - and Shan Kai-ti of Taiwan  failed to bond and were unable strike up a collaborative artistic relationship.  
 Elsewhere, art and design schools are holding their graduation exhibitions. White Tube, a narrow space run by the Hong Kong Art School, presents Lam Yau-sum's Electron Landscape, which shows the results of his recent studies.
Using the bright colours of enamel paint on electronic circuit boards, Lam presents a strong series that warrants careful viewing. 
The fine lines of each circuit board are used as a template, but the permutations of lined choices results in a range of odd-looking creatures. Fish predominate, but camels, dragons and other mythical creatures appear. 
The depiction of a single creature in each painting is restrictive. But the paintings have a surreal Max Ernst air to them. The exhibition bodes well for an artist whose work has already been shown in a Hong Kong dealer gallery.
