Lightweight Primers for Summer

Shu Uemura Sakura Collection UV Under Base Mousse SPF 30 (HK$320/65g)

Claim: an airy mousse base, available in three shades, that gives your skin a semi-matte finish. The Silcoat smoothing technology allows the mousse to contain more UV filters while maintaining a light and soft texture. Also contains hydrating ingredients such as Aquatoril, hyaluronic acid and betaine.

M.A.C. Prep + Prime Fortified Skin Enhancer SPF 35 (HK$260/30ml)

Claim: a tinted skin primer, exclusive to Asia, formulated with soft-focus powders to help even out skin tone and add radiance, available in three tints. Lightweight and invisible, it goes on under foundation or powder for a natural look and subtle glow. It helps protect against pollution and UV rays and is fragrance-free.

Guerlain Blanc de Perle Refining UV Base Brightening Pearl Perfection SPF 30 (HK$420/30ml)

Claim: a light and velvety soft base with UV protection that corrects dark circles and dullness using the Blanc de Perle P.E.A.R.L. formulation, which restores ZO-I protein levels in the skin to free trapped melanin in each layer.

The verdict: the Shu Uemura mousse goes on light and easy as promised, but it dries with a somewhat chalky finish; foundation tends to look a shade lighter when applied on top. M.A.C.'s primer feels a bit thick during application but, when it dries, is colourless and light; concealer or foundation goes on very smoothly after it. Guerlain's refining base glides on effortlessly and continues to moisturise throughout the day. It adds a natural-looking radiance without the aid of foundation and can be used with just a dusting of loose powder.
