Worry over old buildings
A suspicious fire that took the lives of four people has sparked concern about fire safety standards in old tenement buildings across the city. The fire broke out on Wednesday in a building in Ma Tau Wai Road, the same street where an old tenement building collapsed last year. A pregnant woman, her two sons, aged one and six, and a woman, 19, died. Some 19 others were wounded.
Residents complained of locked exits and obstructed escape routes. The Institute of Surveyors said the incident demonstrated the safety threat of subdivided flats.
