Antarctica seems an oasis of peace in a strife-ridden world. That may be largely because, 50 years ago today, the Antarctic Treaty came into force on all land and ice shelves south of 60 degrees south latitude. The international pact set the continent aside as a scientific preserve and banned all military activity, and its success is - happily - plain to see.
