Grasshopper star pays the penalty
Canto-pop star Remus Choy Yat-kit was fined HK$12,000 and ordered to do 160 hours of community service for drink-driving and careless driving. Choy crashed his Bentley while three times over the alcohol limi, Eastern Court heard.
Magistrate David Dufton, who also banned Choy from driving for two years, said the actions of the Grasshopper pop group member could have had tragic consequences.
Choy, who pleaded guilty earlier to drink-driving and careless driving, was told to take a driving-improvement course at his own expense.
Wong Ching-yu SC, for Choy, said the artist bought the car only a week before the accident and was not familiar with it.
The 44-year-old crashed it in Sassoon Road, near Queen Mary Hospital, at about 7.40am on May 1 after sharing two bottles of red wine with friends and sleeping for four hours.
A breath test showed a reading of 66 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of air. The legal limit is 22 micrograms.
Dufton said that if the accident had happened on a weekday, children, parents and other road users might have been affected. The magistrate said Choy failed to stop the car after the crash and it continued to move uphill, hitting a metal railing, a mailbox and a fire hydrant and causing damage along a 200-metre section of road.
He said the HK$12,000 fine was a substantial one and that the community service order, as well as suspension of the driver's licence, was the appropriate punishment given that Choy had pleaded guilty and the accident was not fatal.
Choy, accompanied by relatives and friends including elder brother Calvin Choy Yat-chi and artist Sandy Lam Shan-shan, appeared calm during the verdict.
Outside court, he refused to answer questions about the sentence, but repeatedly said: 'Thank you for showing care.'
Choy had been fined six times before for traffic offences, including five for speeding.
Grasshopper is a trio comprising Choy, his brother Calvin and Edmond So Chi-wai.
