A strong link between alcohol and literature was forged by authors such as Ernest Hemingway, James Joyce and F. Scott Fitzgerald, and it's an association that the Room to Read charity will be drawing on at a fund-raising event this week.
The charity helps children in the developing world by focusing on literacy and gender equality in education, and at Thursday's event at The Pawn it will be raising funds to buy quality language books. For every beer sold at the Beers for Books event, The Pawn will be donating HK$10 towards the cause.
Providing some star power at the event will be Room to Read ambassador and Australian cricketer Shane Watson, who earlier this year attended various fund-raising and promotional events for the charity in Sri Lanka and India. Apart from being the No1 all-rounder in the game, 30-year-old Watson is also an avid reader.
Watson says he joined the Room to Read campaign to make a difference to young lives, as he believes 'people who don't have the opportunity [to read] can get stuck in a certain environment'.
The Beers for Books fund-raiser will take place on the roof garden of The Pawn (62 Johnston Road, Wan Chai) from 6.30pm to 8.30pm. For more information, call 2866 3444 or e-mail email@example.com.
