Appeal over limits on annual July 1 march

Facebook

Civil Human Rights Front, which expects up to 50,000 marchers at this year's July 1 anti-government parade, is appealing against police restrictions imposed on the event.

People on the annual march, held in support of democracy and freedom of speech, must disperse once they reach the Central Government Offices in Central.

Protesters are also forbidden from playing musical instruments, selling flags or raising funds. Anyone in breach of these rules - imposed last Thursday, police say, to ensure public safety - may be arrested.

Organisers have protested to the Appeal Board on Public Meetings and Processions, claiming the demands are unreasonable and in breach of the locals' basic rights.

However, a Facebook page, 'Come along with your instrument on July 1 March' , has been launched. It encourages people to whistle and use mobile phone applications to overcome the ban on music.
