Innovative products set to take centre stage

Ever seen eco-fabric made from recycled plastic bottles, or eco-friendly paint used on hand-painted jeans? Then there is a viscose rayon fabric suitable for people with sensitive skin, which has been made from cotton seeds.

These are among the innovative products on show at the annual Hong Kong Fashion Week for Spring/Summer which opened yesterday, with an 'Into the Light' showcase of collections from 12 past winners and finalists of the Hong Kong Fashion Designers Contest.

Benjamin Chau Kai-leung, deputy executive director of the Trade Development Council, which organises the event, said: 'Hong Kong fashion designers are trendsetters who understand the market. With such talent on hand, Hong Kong Fashion Week is an ideal international platform for the industry to expand its business.'

Now in its 18th edition, 1,300 exhibitors come from 24 nations including the United Arab Emirates, new participant. Seven regional pavilions will represent the mainland, India, Indonesia, Japan, Macau, South Korea and Taiwan. New product theme zones include the Denim Arcade and Handbags Select.

Total exports of clothing and accessories from Hong Kong last year reached US$23.95 billion. Hong Kong, as the world's second largest exporter of clothing, is a major trading hub for the garment industry.

The Summer Sourcing Show for Gifts, Houseware & Toys, also opened yesterday at the Convention and Exhibition Centre.
