Lawmaker apologises

Kowloon West lawmaker Priscilla Leung Mei-fun has apologised for having said it was reasonable for voters to be punished if they voted for a legislator who later resigned.

In a statement issued yesterday, Leung (pictured) retracted the remark, made in a TVB interview last Monday to defend her suggestion that by-elections for Legislative Council vacancies caused by resignations be scrapped.

Meanwhile, Peng Qinghua, director of the central government's liaison office, welcomed the administration's decision to launch a public consultation on how to fill midterm vacancies in Legco. The government last week shelved plans to push through without consultation legislation to scrap midterm by-elections. Peng spoke in Shenzhen, where he met 25 legislators.

He was quoted by participants as saying the community had different views on the complex matter and it was good for the government to hear more opinions.
