Teams rise to challenge

Twelve teams of students with ideas for protecting the environment have made the final shortlist for the Project Green Challenge Hong Kong.

The scheme is part of the Disney Friends for Change initiative run jointly by Hong Kong Disneyland Resort and The Boys' and Girls' Clubs Association.

Teams will carry out their ideas this summer with the help of a mentor and report on the outcome at the association's 75th anniversary carnival celebration.

Four Form One students at Maryknoll Convent School, who call themselves 'The Recyclist 4' team, devised a plan to reuse discarded paper and clothes. 'Our goal has been to be creative and turn a piece of rubbish into something useful,' says Bianca Chan Ying-ying, 13.

They are collecting discarded 'Post-it' notes thrown away at school and shredding them to make new notepads and using old clothes to make new garments.

Team member Catherine Vong says: 'Some students think they are only kids and can't do much. But we can all do our part. It's not age, but our unity and heart that matters.'
