A means of bringing books to life is going on show at the 22nd Hong Kong Book Fair tomorrow.
By simply pointing your smartphone at the printed page, a three-dimensional image complete with sound and movement will appear on the screen.
A demonstration involves the classic story of The Gingerbread Man.
In the book, an illustration shows only the old man and old woman in their old house. But using the technology, a 3-D image of the Gingerbread Man jumps out, shouting: 'Run, run as fast as you can. But you'll not catch the Gingerbread man.'
The new technology is called Augmented Reality and uses the camera function on the smartphone.
By downloading the programme, the camera will pick up codes - similar to bar codes - hidden on the printed pages. When the camera is pointed at the page, the pictures will pop up on the screen, helping the reader to see the action being described.
