Fears over web bid

The owner of the online radio station Hong Kong Reporter, Shiu Yeuk-yuen, has offered HK$10 million to buy one of the city's most popular internet forums, hkgolden.com. However, internet users are worried that Hong Kong Reporter, which has close ties with radical political group People Power, will censor opinions posted on the website.

Technology writer Martin Oei is worried that freedom of speech in cyberspace will be harmed by the purchase.

Hundreds of users may leave hkgolden.com if the buyout is successful. 'If it is true, it is really the end of hkgolden.com,' said one.

Shiu responded: 'Compared with other online media like Facebook, YouTube and Google, Hong Kong Reporter is not very big. We don't control everything.'

He said he might ask hkgolden.com's 180,000 users to vote. If half were to choose against the plan, it would not happen.
