The return of Atlantis yesterday marks the end of America's vaunted space shuttle programme, which has seen soaring highs and devastating lows over 30 years. Over the course of three decades, five Nasa space crafts - Atlantis, Challenger, Columbia, Discovery and Endeavour - have comprised the fleet of shuttles, designed as the world's first reusable space vehicles.
