Fans of the no-holds-barred sex column 'Savage Love' should not buy The Commitment hoping to be titillated. But if it's an insight into how one gay couple chose to live their lives, they should find plenty that will make them rethink love, sex, marriage and family. At 33, author Dan Savage and his partner Terry adopted D.J. as a baby from his natural mother, a homeless teenager unable to care for him. But other than the boy having two fathers, much else about his upbringing seems 'normal', even enviable, filled as it was with love. Savage tells of the uncomfortable questions that D.J. asked, and the conclusions he came to owing to the 'soft bigotry of gender expectations': how his parents couldn't possibly love each other because they were not married, for example. Straight readers may find interesting Savage's theory about early opposition to the so-called gay lifestyle: 'Straight people resented gay people for giving themselves permission to ... have fun while you're young.'
