Train carriages plunge off bridge
Two carriages of a high-speed train travelling from the provincial capital Hangzhou to Fuzhou plunged from a bridge after derailing in Zhejiang province around 8.30pm yesterday, Xinhua reported, citing local fire sources.
Firefighters were on the scene and Hu Yadong, the deputy railways minister, was on his way.
Each carriage has a capacity of about 100 passengers, but the number of casualties remained unknown.
Train No D3115 left Hangzhou at 4.36pm and derailed at a track section in Shuangyu town in Wenzhou at 8.34pm, firefighters said.
The Shanghai Times reported on its Sina microblog that the carriages derailed after the train collided with an oncoming train. It said some passengers with head wounds attempted to escape through broken windows of the train. Photos posted to the microblog showed that parts of the derailed carriages were smashed and turned upside down.
