About one in six Hongkongers own a tablet computer, about six times the worldwide average, a global survey says.

Market research firm TNS interviewed 34,000 people across 43 countries, including 501 in Hong Kong, over the past year.

Results show Hongkongers are much keener on new gadgets than people in other developed places: 17 per cent of respondents in the city indicate they own a tablet, nearly six times the global average of 3 per cent.

A further 50 per cent say they intend to buy a tablet, more than three times the global average of 15 per cent. To a majority of local respondents, 61 per cent, a tablet is an additional device, not a substitute for a personal computer or mobile phone. Only 27 per cent say they may buy a tablet to replace a PC.

A tablet is the preferred device of 52 per cent of Hongkongers for reading e-books, compared with 15 per cent who prefer mobile phones and 21 per cent who favour PCs.
