Authorities criticised for seizing bicycles

A green group slammed the government for discouraging the use of environmentally friendly transport as illegally parked bicycles outside the Tai Wai MTR station were confiscated after very short notice.

Olivia Yong and her husband were shocked to find that their bikes, parked outside the station, had disappeared on July 8. She thought they had been stolen until she saw a notice in the basket of another one saying bicycles still there after July 7 would be seized.

She contacted the Lands Department, which admitted taking the action. The department said it left the warning notices on July 5.

'I didn't even see the notification. It was too fast.' she said.

Philip Heung Fu-lap, of the Hong Kong Cycling Alliance, said the government should accept cycling in its transport system, as it was 'greener, healthier and cheaper, and avoids traffic jams'.
