2/F Mandarin Oriental Macau, Avenida Dr Sun Yat Sen, Outer Harbour, Macau

The vibe: all of the swish hotels and casinos to have recently sprouted in Macau have fairly impressive bars, but most are lacking in sophistication.
The Mandarin Oriental Macau's Vida Rica (which means 'rich life' in Portuguese) stands out from the crowd with a truly chic atmosphere, and sleek decor blending European minimalism and classic Chinese lacquerware detailing. The floor-to-ceiling windows offer a distracting view over Nam Van Lake, dominated by the Macau Tower and historic buildings on the distant hills.
The drinks: mainly cocktails. The menu was designed by a mixologist brought over from New York and includes signature drinks such as the Go Go Gold (HK$82, blending rum, Cointreau, orange and lemon juice, syrup and yuzu) and the MO Man Tai (HK$82, combining vodka, rum, pineapple, lemon juice and fresh mango). There's also an impressive selection of single-malt whiskies topped by Glenmorangie Quarter Century (HK$420 per shot) and the Lagavulin 25 Years Cask Strength (HK$490 per shot).
The verdict: don't mistake Vida Rica for your average hotel bar. With cosy nooks to hide in with a friend, a view to die for (it's a prime position for watching fireworks displays, according to the staff), a well-thought-out cocktail menu, a great selection of food such as the Tapas Tower (HK$258), and more than 200 wines by the bottle, Vida Rica offers visitors to Macau a truly rich experience.
