Cape Crusader

As the pre-autumn collections roll into stores, it's the perfect time to stock up on winter essentials. Coats are a wardrobe staple, but capes are a cool alternative. This season's variations are much sleeker, with minimal details and futuristic silhouettes that range from collarless styles to long wraparounds and cropped versions, as spotted at Yves Saint Laurent. Instead of wearing your cape open, tighten it at the waist with a belt, or look for vintage inspired closures such as covered buttons. Colours should be dark and classic. Little Red Riding Hood need not apply.

Shoes

Pointed toes are making a comeback, so try Rupert Sanderson's 1950s-inspired Pikon pumps (HK$5,880), which come in navy suede and patent leather, and have subtle pleats on the front.

Glasses

Instead of bold, oversized frames, try these butterfly shaped ones from Chanel's new Prestige eyewear collection (HK$4,200 to HK$4,600). The arms feature chains woven with leather for a luxe look.

Bags

Since capes have arm holes or slits instead of sleeves, it's best to get a bag that is easy to carry. A clutch is great for the evening, or opt for a bag with short handles such as the Amazzone tote from Furla (HK$6,995). It's made from nappa leather and comes with zip detailing that's edgy and modern.

Jewellery

Add an air of mystery with this mask pendant necklace by Aurelie Bidermann from Rue Madame. It comes in large or small sizes, gold or silver plated - prices range from HK$5,750 to HK$7,375.
