Police van rammed in car chase drama
A driver rammed a police van and sped through red lights during a chase early yesterday. The drama began at about 1.15am when the driver refused to pull over for police in Kwai Chung and ended with two officers receiving minor injuries when their van was sent careering into railings in Tsuen Wan. The car sped off. Its 26-year-old owner was later arrested at his home in Wong Tai Sin. Police were last night still looking for the car.
Democratic Party names new chief executive
Former graft-buster Lam Cheuk-ting has become the new chief executive of the Democratic Party, succeeding Chan Ka-wai, who quit after being caught visiting a one-woman brothel last month. Lam, 34, said opposition from his wife was the biggest obstacle for him in giving up his job at the Independent Commission Against Corruption and restarting his political career. 'But I want to contribute to the city's democratic development,' he said.
Teenage boy collapses during soccer warm-up
A 16-year-old boy was rushed to hospital unconscious after collapsing in Tong Yam Street playground, Sham Shui Po, as he was warming up for a soccer game. He was taken unconscious to Caritas Medical Centre and later transferred to Princess Margaret Hospital. His condition last night was not known.
Jobs battle looms for aspiring civil servants
The annual recruitment exercise for a new intake of civil servants will kick off in September. Would-be executive officers need to pass the Common Recruitment Examination and Basic Law Test, which will be held on October 8 and 15. It is not known how many jobs are on offer.
Jailed driver sued over death crash
A relative and friend of taxi driver Yiu Wing-cheong, who was killed aged 51 in a car crash which almost beheaded him, are suing the man jailed for causing his death by dangerous driving, according to a High Court writ. Yiu Kwok-fung and Lui Zhongxiu want damages from Au Chi-ming for the 2008 crash.
