A large patio may be out of reach for many in Hong Kong but that doesn't mean the backyard-living vibe can't be created indoors.
A trend has emerged for furniture that looks like it can be used inside as well as out, from chairs inspired by fish scales to bright bench seats with imaginative cut- outs and indoor lighting inspired by stones.
Danish design house Fritz Hansen (fritzhansen.com) offers the Ice line of tables and chairs made from anodised aluminium and plastic. The chair comes in two heights, with or without arms, and is available in a selection of colours. Fritz Hansen is carried in Hong Kong by retailers such as Lane Crawford, Aluminium (www. aluminium-furniture.com), Ovo (ovo.com .hk) and Manks (manks.com).
A collection of striking, summery items from United States brand Coalesse has arrived in Hong Kong. The Pattern line, by designer Arik Levy, features stackable chairs, benches and tables with cut-out hexagonal patterns. Prices start at US$599 for a round table and go up to US$849 for a square version. Coalesse's Hong Kong distributor is Steelcase (steelcase.asia).
In a vibrant and whimsical take on the trend, Australian designer Jason Bird (luxxbox.com) has released the Tingle series of stools and tables in fruity shades such as 'lime fizz'. Prices are available on request.
From Italian lighting company Oluce comes the Stones series - translucent opaline glass lamps shaped like large boulders that give off a soft crystalline glow (US$400 to US$600). For details, contact Hong Kong dealer LIGHTism (lightism-global.com).
A white ceramic removable top gives an outdoorsy feel to the tables produced by Germany's Zeitraum (zeitraum-moebel.de), whose Apu line was designed by Hanna Ehlers. The tables can be sourced through the brand's main office in Germany or Design Republic in Shanghai (thedesignrepublic.com).
