A Russian of some refinement visiting town who was being entertained to dinner by the owner of an art gallery inquired earnestly during the meal: 'Tell me, what do you think will happen in Hong Kong in 1997 after the Bolsheviks come here?' The host was initially nonplussed but recovered smartly to deliver the perfect riposte - he reached for a glass of champagne. Caviar, anyone?
