Sashay Cafe and Wine Bar

Shop C, G/F, 52-56 Staunton Street, Central. Tel: 2272 4303

The vibe: Sashay occupies a prime position on the edge of SoHo, sitting on the corner of Staunton and Aberdeen streets, but was curiously empty during happy hour one recent weeknight. After taking up one of the three tables on the outside of the rustic brick-and-wooden venue and flipping through the drinks list, we soon realised why. Although it styles itself as a wine bar, Sashay offers just five whites and the same number of reds, and a pretty tired cocktail list.

The drinks: mainly wines, apparently. The list starts with the Chilean Vina Ventisquero chardonnay (HK$40 a glass or HK$200 a bottle) and the Rongopai pinot noir from New Zealand (HK$50/HK$240), and didn't offer anything that really caught our eye, but we were happy enough with the drinkable Riff Pinot Grigio delle Venezie (HK$63/HK$300). There are no beers on tap, but the brief list of bottles includes the acceptable Hoegaarden Forbidden Fruit (HK$60) and London Pride (HK$65). We moved on to the cocktail list and were served a couple of fairly bland mojitos (HK$68). Then a cockroach flew into my ear - it was time to go.

The verdict: with an uninspired drinks list, poor use of an impressive location and quite annoying music, Sashay doesn't quite swing. The service was attentive and friendly, but we'd need more reasons than that to return.
