Star power on display for City'super 15th anniversary - but free food the real draw
Whether celebrity or plebeian, a real Hongkonger is equipped with a nose for free food and drink. More than 250 food lovers - invited guests and probably a few gatecrashers - crammed into the Times Square basement rotunda on Tuesday for City'super's 15th anniversary and a taste of its imported gourmet fare.
The fashion world's Wyman Wong Wai-man, Janet Ma Shi-hui and Winifred Lai Li Jian-hui, and rocker Calvin Choi Yat-chi of Grasshopper and his wife Chow Suet-fong were a few of the guests camped out by a food bar serving crabmeat, tomato and mozzarella, seared foie gras and pastries. One overheated guest had to be helped out of the party after swooning during the champagne toast.
The crowd got even more excited when City'super executive chef Charmaine Cheung pulled out an aged bottle of balsamic vinegar and began drizzling it over freshly opened oysters. Magician Kohei Kobayashi might have given the performance of his life at the party, but most guests were too busy lining up for food to notice.
