The Oriental Spa at the Landmark Mandarin Oriental is offering an extravagant summer body treatment, combining special massage techniques with a selection of high-potency products from Dr Ivo Pitanguy's Clinica Ivo Pitanguy in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The two-hour-long Intense Rejuvenating Body Treatment is designed to improve microcirculation and oxygenation of the tissues. It promises to eliminate excess water and firm up the body, sculpting the contours to create a slimmer, more youthful silhouette.

While definitely a five-star treatment, spa junkies be warned: this is not one of those kick back and snooze pampering sessions.

It starts as you'd expect, with a rich scrub gently massaged into the whole body while steam released from a nearby machine helps absorb the nourishing oils. But just as you start to relax, you are invited to get up and have a shower. When you lie down again, a firming, draining and tightening formula from the Beauty by Clinica Ivo Pitanguy BodyCare collection is then applied, followed by shockingly icy towels placed across the thighs, upper arms and bust area.

Thankfully, the bed is heated and soft, and the therapist explains that it's all for the worthy cause of firming and improved circulation.

Finally, the cold towels are removed and a deliciously thick revitalising formula is smoothed onto the body and massaged in. The products all have a gentle, sweet floral scent. Although it's suggested that you return every two weeks or so to maintain optimal results, another more practical option would be to stock up on the product line and continue applying at home.

It's worth arriving up to an hour before your appointment, so you can enjoy the Oriental Spa's luxurious heat and water facilities. There's a vitality pool, experience showers, tepidarium (warmed) chairs and an ice fountain. There's also a laconium and amethyst crystal steam room, and a zen relaxation room to get you in the right 'zone' before the treatment.

Pitanguy is both a surgeon and a philanthropist. He founded the Clinica Ivo Pitanguy in 1963, after reconstructing the skin of victims of a severe circus fire two years earlier. He also cares for underprivileged children and adults in the humanitarian hospital of Santa Casa.

Intense Rejuvenating Body Treatment, 120mins, HK$2,250 (weekday)/HK$2,330 (weekend)
