It was a baptism by fire for London's acting police commissioner, who took charge of the police force after his bosses quit recently over the phone hacking and corruption scandals. As London streets burned, journalists captured footage showing a line of Metropolitan Policemen in full riot gear standing back as rioters looted stores. The videos led to widespread accusations the police were not being proactive enough.

The vice-president of the Shanxi Vinegar Industry Association resigned after reporting that most vinegars advertised as the well-known 'Shanxi Mature Vinegar' were not genuine and were produced by blending chemicals and preservatives, rather than through a process of natural fermentation. Local media said association president Cao Wenjie asked the whistle-blower to quit because 'his remarks had hurt local vinegar producers'.

The chief executive of the Hong Kong stock exchange had to move quickly when the exchange's regulatory disclosure website was hacked by cyber criminals two days in a row. The first time the system crashed, Li suspended trading in seven major companies as a precaution. On the following day the hackers attempt to crash the system failed.
