Officer hurt in fall at government HQ

Li Keqiang

A policeman sustained serious injuries after falling while making a building security check at the new government headquarters in Admiralty yesterday morning.

Constable Ng Hon-man, 31, fell six metres from where he was checking a false ceiling at the main entrance to the government headquarters. He was knocked unconscious and hurt his head, ribs, lungs and left arm.

The policeman, who was attached to a safety rope and wearing a helmet when he fell, was among eight officers from the force's key points and search division carrying out a security inspection ahead of the official visit by Vice-Premier Li Keqiang , who will attend the completion ceremony of the new government complex on Thursday.

Officers from the key points and search division are responsible for security checks at all of the venues Li will visit during his three-day official tour.

'It was an accident,' Police Commissioner Andy Tsang Wai-hung said. 'We will remind our colleagues to take extra caution while carrying out work at heights.'

Ng underwent surgery and last night was still in the intensive care unit at Queen Mary Hospital.
