Food prices hurt poor

Martin Wong

One in six poor families with children are often hungry, says a study by Oxfam.

The World Wealth Report said Hong Kong last year had more than 100,000 people worth US$1 million or more. But Oxfam said there were also 144,400 families with children that could be called poor, living each month on less than half the median household income of HK$9,500.

Oxfam found one in six such families had 'high food insecurity'.

Kalina Tsang Ka-wai, Oxfam programme manager, says: 'This is shocking. We did not expect such a situation in Hong Kong.'

Cheng Yim-ting, 12, says that about four times a week she eats only breakfast and lunch, not dinner. Her parents are ill and cannot work and the family's income is only monthly welfare of HK$7,500.
