Solar energy boat soaks up HK sun

Energy

Recently, a very special boat visited Hong Kong.

The Turanor PlanetSolar gets all the energy it uses from sunshine.

The wide, flat deck of the boat is covered with solar panels. Solar panels turn sunshine into electricity. This electricity powers all the boat's motors and gadgets, even the refrigerator.

The Turanor PlanetSolar is the largest solar boat ever made. It left Europe last September for a 60,000-kilometre voyage around the world.

This is the first sea voyage for a solar-powered boat.

Solar energy doesn't cause pollution. It is hoped that this voyage will help show solar energy can replace oil and coal in the future.

Five facts about SOLAR POWER

1 In one hour the Earth receives more energy from the Sun than humans use in one year.

2 About 30 per cent of the Sun's energy is reflected back into space by the Earth.

3 Solar energy from the day can be stored in batteries and used at night.

4 The world's supply of oil could run out in the next 50 years.

5 The Sun could keep going for a further 5 billion years.
