Niagara Falls worth taking a plunge on

Robin Parke

BOTTOMWEIGHT Niagara Falls has no record on equitrack but he could be worth taking a chance with in the first leg of the Double Trio at Happy Valley tomorrow night.

French rider Eric Saint-Martin finished second on the Alex Wong Yu-on galloper last time out over 1,650 metres on the Valley turf, beaten a short head by Exporter whose overall form is good.

Drawn against the rails, Saint-Martin will make full use of the gelding's natural speed and that is always an advantage on the synthetic surface.

Niagara Falls does not necessarily lack resolution as he showed when posting a strong win over a mile on grass at the city track at the end of last season. He seems to be a horse in form and is worth siding with for a first leg banker.

Although the deepened equitrack surface should give horses coming from behind a chance, it may still prove wiser to stick with those who can leg it along in front - as Niagara Falls undoubtedly does. And off a light weight he should keep right on going.

Equitrack specialist Scan Lord cannot be left out of calculations although this is harder while Love Match is getting on in years but does like the surface.

Figure It Out ran a bolter of a race for Basil Marcus last time out but after that run over a mile may be looking for longer at his second appearance.

Make Merry is a useful type in Class Five and starts for the first time for trainer Steven S.L. Leung after moving from John Moore.

Tony Cruz takes the ride and Make Merry, who has done his share of work, should be kept safe.

In the second leg of the DT - a local riders' race - Rambo Tse Wai-ho could provide the answer with Thor Win.

This dour stayer from the David Oughton stable had a solid hit out at his first run of the season before fading in the concluding stages but will be so much better now for that outing.

He is involved in a Classes Four and Five, 2,000-metre event and it is certainly well within his capabilities.

Young Simon H.K. Yim starts a four-meeting suspension after this meeting and he could be seen to advantage on Joyful Delight. The Peter Tse Yan-sid galloper tackles equitrack and 2,000 metres for the first time so there are adequate reasons why a decent price should be available.

He should get the trip and he has been racing in good form which suggests Joyful Delight should not be left out.

Sir Barnley and Casablanca are the other chances.
