It's a year since Philip Pullman published his meditation on Jesus of Nazareth's split personality: half man, half god; half hero, half villain. His publisher, Canongate, has now released an enhanced e-book, which includes: apps to a synchronised text and audiobook version; interviews with Pullman on the inspiration for the novel and its reception since release; a constantly updating newsfeed; a nifty Night Mode version, which places white type against a black background; and all the usual searchable features. Pullman himself reads the audiobook. He is a brisk, throaty interpreter of his prose, but sensitive enough to bring out the very different characters. He is rather better when talking about the novel, religion and the future of publishing. But it is worth remembering that there's a controversial story among the flash apps: about the original birth of Christianity and Pullman's conviction that it has been subsequently distorted and nearly destroyed. A fine addition to your growing enhanced e-book library.
