There are no female-only passenger cars in Hong Kong, but curiously almost all public transport heading to the AsiaWorld-Arena last Wednesday was filled by girls.

The single-gender crowd was drawn to the second day of a K-pop festival which featured 40 Korean artists in what could be the largest line-up ever. Four boy bands - CN Blue, FTIsland, 2AM and nine-member group ZE:A - performed that night.

Unlike other music festivals, participants did not rock with beers in the mosh pit. Instead, they busily snapped pictures of their idols.

Fans arrived early to spread their K-pop love. A CN Blue fan-club member gave out flashy placards and home-made souvenirs to concert-goers. Other internet fan groups erected big posters of their favourites outside the venue, quickly attracting pilgrims keen to take photos.

Miranda Luk, 16, waved a yellow flag that identified FTIsland fans. The secondary-school student, like many others, got to know the band's lead singer a year ago when she watched Korean drama You're Beautiful, which centred on a teen-idol band.

'I haven't listened to any Canto-pop since I was in Form Two,' Luk said. 'I may listen to some Taiwanese songs, but not local ones. Korean groups are more gifted.'
