What you'll need

A piece of fabric

Needle and thread or sewing machine

Step-by-step guide:

1 To work out the size you need, flatten your book onto a piece of fabric and mark the outer edges. You should leave an extra 1cm both on the top and bottom for the seams and 5cm at the sides for the flaps.

2 Cut out the rectangular piece you have marked out.

3 Fold the top and bottom edges 0.5cm from the edge. Sew a hem to make the edges neat. Make sure you fold with the patterned side facing out.

4 Make the flaps for the book covers. Fold over the shorter sides of the material 0.5cm from the edge and sew a hem. Then fold over 5cm from each side. Sew along the top and bottom of each flap to secure.

5 Once all the edges and flaps have been sewn up, lay the jacket down so the pattern is facing up, and the hems are facing down.

6 Sew a button onto the right flap.

7 Sew the ribbon to the left flap.

8 Add motifs or cutouts from T-shirts to decorate the jacket before fitting the finished product to the book. The button will go on the front cover, and the ribbon will wrap around your book to keep it closed.
