Poor ranking for HK, but it's better than Singapore

Hong Kong is 31st on a ranking of world's most liveable cities by an Economist Intelligence Unit study. Osaka and Tokyo were in 12th and 18th positions and Singapore 51st. Hong Kong scores worst on health care, culture and the environment, with the humidity and temperature rated 'uncomfortable'. Melbourne, Vienna and Vancouver occupy the top three positions.

Restaurants' feuding brothers go to mediation

The feuding Chui brothers behind the celebrated Fook Lam Moon restaurants have agreed to attempt mediation to resolve their long-running dispute, the Court of First Instance was told yesterday. If mediation failed, the dispute would return to court in the first quarter of 2013. The court ordered the parties to provide expert valuations of all relevant properties.

10 years for drug-crazed killing of stepfather

A man who killed his stepfather by stabbing and choking him during a psychotic episode while on ketamine was jailed for 10 years. Vicken Chiu Wai-kan, 26, whose original conviction for murder in 2008 was overturned by the Court of Appeal because the jury was not told of his psychosis, had pleaded guilty to manslaughter. The Court of Appeal also ordered that Chiu be placed under supervision after his release from jail in case he returned to drugs and became a threat to society.

Probation for couple who buried drowned newborn

Cheung Chun-kit, 17, and Ma Hoi-ching, 18, who buried their newborn baby on a Fanling hillside last year, were put on probation for a year after pleading guilty in Kwun Tong Court to conspiracy to prevent the burial of a body. The baby was accidentally drowned when Ma, who did not know she was pregnant and thought she had a stomach ache, gave birth over a toilet at her Sai Kung home on October 6.
