Zoning plans to protect country park enclaves

The Town Planning Board yesterday applied interim zoning plans to two country park enclaves in Lantau and Tai Po to prevent unauthorised development. Nearly all the 166.9 hectares in Keng Shan and Luk Wu, which house clusters of Buddhist monasteries, is now temporarily zoned for 'unspecified use' and only 0.41 hectares for village development. Most of the 108 hectares in Yim Tin Tsai and Ma Shi Chau has been zoned for unspecified use. The public can comment up to November 2.

100 fight blaze in Tin Shui Wai recycling plant

It took about 100 firemen more than three hours to put out a blaze in a recycling plant and two garages in Tin Shui Wai yesterday. Emergency crews were called to Shek Po Road at 5.12am when fire broke out in one of the garages. The fire spread to cover an area of 10,000 square metres. Eight water jets were used to fight the fire, which was extinguished at about 8.35am. No one was injured.

TDC chairman gets another two-year term

Jack So Chak-kwong has been reappointed chairman of the Trade Development Council. Chief Executive Donald Tsang Yam-kuen said So would continue to enhance the image of Hong Kong brands overseas and nurture the city's small and medium enterprises. The former MTR and PCCW executive was appointed chairman four years ago. His next term, which starts on October 1, is for two years.

Six more recyclers to set up at Eco Park

Contracts have been awarded to six more waste recyclers to operate at the government-funded Eco Park in Tuen Mun, the Environmental Protection Department said. Their operations will cover recycling of tyres, metals, lead acid batteries, construction materials, and electrical and electronic equipment. The park now has 14 tenants employing about 190 people. When it is fully commissioned, it will provide up to 750 jobs.
