When it comes to plush accommodation and superb recreational facilities, the Empire Hotel & Country Club (EHCC) in Brunei meets the highest international standards.

But along with pampering jet-setting executives and wealthy travellers, the resort also rolls out a special welcome mat for children.

Family travel on an international scale is an expanding demographic in the tourism trade and even some exclusive, up-market accommodation providers are now offering exciting child-friendly packages.

At EHCC, children can enjoy everything from water sports, such as kayaking and banana boating, to badminton and squash, or simply spend time playing in the pool or on the beach.

The latest in technology is also available for hi-tech youngsters, and a variety of games and activities are organised daily by the E Kids Club for the under-12s.

A unique offering introduced this year is a junior golf academy which is suitable for children under 18 of all skill levels.

These lessons are available either once a week for an hour, per day or three times a week for 90 minutes per day, with instruction given by the resort's resident PGA golf professional, Ahmad Bateman.

Starwood Hotels and Resorts group has also set its sights firmly on enhancing family holidays by making children feel at home.

The international chain has launched its SPG Kids Pass, allowing the 12-and-under brigade to enjoy food and drinks on an all-inclusive basis at participating resorts.

For a flat daily rate of just US$10 to US$20 on average, youngsters can enjoy access to a variety of dining options, including children's menus, buffets (where available) and beverages.

'By making mealtimes easy and fun for kids, we're aiming to give the entire family an even more enjoyable vacation experience,' says Matt Avril, president, hotel group, at Starwood Hotels.

The programme was piloted at several of the chain's properties and, after great feedback, has been rolled out at some 150 Starwood resorts around the world.

SPG Kids Pass is available exclusively for members of the Starwood Preferred Guest (SPG) programme.
