Comments such as 'Wah, you gained weight', 'Still not married?', 'You're not getting any younger' and 'You're not a spring chicken any more' have been increasing in frequency when I visit the family. Having no desire to get hitched just yet nor become Hong Kong's answer to Mr Motivator, I've decided instead to address the irreversible process of ageing.

Even if you have more forgiving skin, sometimes it needs help recapturing the last breath of youth. At 28, I still have some time to go, but the effects of stress, work and pollution have started to show on my skin. The Plateau Spa at the Grand Hyatt Hong Kong has recently introduced a new signature treatment - the Instant Luminous Lift facial - so I leapt on the chance to give it a test drive.

The treatment is said to be powered by a special machine that uses clinically proven TriPollar technology developed in Israel. I've never experienced a machine-based facial, so this was to be interesting from the onset. This one is completely non-invasive; a cream is applied all over the face in smooth, circular strokes by the therapist, and then the vibrating metallic head of the machine is applied to your face in circular motions. A pleasant heat begins to emanate.

The treatment is supposed to stimulate new collagen production in your skin cells. It claims to instantly tighten face and neck, reduce fine lines and wrinkles and improve skin texture for a healthier and more youthful appearance.

I found the process quite calming. Although some people prefer hand massaged facials that are more relaxing, I did sense that this machine could do more within the time frame. Afterwards, my skin felt soft and smooth and definitely a little younger as the vibrations and heat boosted face circulation, as well.

Was there instant tightening and reduction of fine lines and wrinkles, as claimed? Yes, in a way, there was some immediate visible improvement, but the effects were actually more noticeable the next day, when my skin texture was smoother and even that annoying wrinkle in the middle of my brow had disappeared. The effects had all but disappeared by days three and four though.

The facial is a little pricey but showed some good short-term effects. The therapist says longer lasting effects can be obtained with more frequent sessions.
