Lion city stays on top
Singapore has retained its position as Asia's top convention city, according to last year's global country and city ranking by the International Congress and Convention Association.
A total of 9,120 events were held last year, up 826 from the previous year, the highest number recorded by the association. Growth was attributed to the acceleration of scientific and technological developments after the buoyant years in 2008 and 2009, and the need to discuss these complex changes face-to-face.
Singapore hosted 136 events, followed by Sydney with 102, Taipei (99), Beijing (98), Seoul (91), and Hong Kong (82). Singapore also ranked fifth on a global basis, after Vienna (154), Barcelona (148), Paris (147) and Berlin (138).
In global rankings, Sydney (up from 13th to 6th) and Taipei (25th to 11th) showed good performance last year, while Bangkok dropped out of the top 20 as a result of political unrest in the middle of the year.
Among countries in Asia, Japan took the lead with 305 events followed by China (282), Australia (239) and South Korea (186).
