Embracing the idea of teddy bear collection

PERHAPS it is time to start your Christmas shopping and if you are a teddy bear fan, then read on.

In the past, a teddy bear was just a teddy bear. But today, it's a collector's item.

There are teddy bear decorations, clothing, bags and jewellery, almost anything you can think of. While many people spend a lot on bear memorabilia, you can actually collect these items in Hong Kong without really burning a hole in your pocket.

Teddy bear decorations are available at the Gala Shopping Mall in Mongkok, where a shop on the ground floor sells fashions plus teddy bear frames, calendars and wooden interior collections. Another shop on the second floor has a full collection of teddy bear decorations, such as mini-porcelain sets and mirrors.

The shop offers discount ranging from 20 per cent to 40 per cent.

At the Tsuen Fung Centre near the Tsuen Wan MTR station, the selection of teddy bear clothing is something bargain-hunters should not miss.

Usually in Hong Kong department stores, a Japanese bear sweater costs about $800 and a jacket over $1,000. Yet, at two shops on the centre's first floor, a Japanese bear sweater or jacket only costs $500.

Teddy bear bags can be purchased at the Lik Sang Plaza in Tsuen Wan. Bags range form $200 to $300 depending on the size. The highest price for a bear purse is $200.

A complete collection of bear bags and purses, however, is offered on the third level of the Metro Plaza (East Wing) in Kwai Fong.

Prices are reasonable, too.

Teddy bear jewellery is becoming more and more popular, but it is not cheap. The Merrythrough World of Collectors Teddies on the first floor of Seibu may be a place to buy bear jewellery at reasonable prices.
