Game is not over for former Wong horses
The weight of owner expectation must be building on the trainers of horses like Flying Smart, Goldmen YY, Fulgurite, Pure Force, Presto, Conqueror, Winning Scholar, Telecom Gogo and even Mr Speedy.
What they have in common is that all of them were trained by Alex Wong Yu-on before his retirement at the close of last season, and that seems to have been a recipe for success this term.
Ten runners from the former Wong string have appeared at the races, four of them have been winners - Benefactor, My Memory, Ray's Favourite and Great Renown - while Lucky Warrior was wide all the way when he finished second at Sha Tin.
Wong was what might be described as an old-school trainer and Peter Ng Bik-kuen, who took over the bulk of the yard and has won with Benefactor, My Memory and Ray's Favourite, said as much after Benefactor's win last Wednesday.
Ng said Benefactor had been a fairly slow maturing type and not overtaxed by Wong with 10 starts in his first 18 months. The same probably applies to Ray's Favourite, who had also shown some ability in New Zealand trials before his arrival.
Whether that sees a pattern with the remainder of the yard remains to be seen but it has been an interesting trend to date, with even some of the beaten former Wong horses showing that the game is not over for them yet.
