Jewellery chain set to give rivals a run for their money in chase for young customers

Compared to other jewellery chain boutiques springing up around town, Larry Jewelry might not ring a familiar bell. The 44-year-old brand is a rarity in that it still has its products made entirely in Hong Kong, hand-crafted by seasoned artisans.

Larry opened its fourth store on Tuesday, in Percival Street, Causeway Bay, next to a string of other jewellers' shops. But brand executive director Pauline Tsang Po-yee does not fear the competition.

'We have a good foundation through our 44 years in business. The brand has always targeted the tai-tai crowd, and now we are looking to target a younger market,' said Tsang, who formerly worked in banking and joined her family's business in December. 'We are planning new shops next year in Shanghai and Beijing, as well.'

TVB actors Moses Chan Ho and Linda Chung Ka-yan were guests at the store opening. The pair attracted an army of entertainment reporters eager to find out if they would be leaving the station to seek work on the mainland for fatter pay cheques, like some of their former co-stars have done. Both denied the rumours and said they would stick with their employer. It seems that loyalty matters more to some people than multi-carat diamonds.
